I’m Not There Yet (But These 10 Skills Are Helping Me Climb)

Have you ever looked at successful people and thought, “How do they do it all?”I used to think there was a secret formula I was missing. I thought I needed to be a genius or have the perfect background. But over the years, I realized something important: it isn’t about magic. It is about the toolkit you carry.I am not writing this because I have “made it.” Far from it. I am writing this because I am still climbing the mountain, stumbling often, and learning as I go. But along the way, I found some tools—specific skills—that completely changed my trajectory. If you are feeling stuck or wondering where to start, maybe these tools can help you, too.

The Foundation: Making Yourself Useful

We all want to feel valuable, right? We want to know that we can contribute something to the world. For me, this started with Data Analysis and Project Management. It sounds technical, but really, it is just about bringing order to chaos. Learning to understand data helped me see the truth behind the noise. And project management? That is just the art of getting things done without losing your mind! But being able to do the work wasn’t enough; I had to learn how to show it. That’s where Graphic Design and Public Speaking came in. Whether it is designing a simple thumbnail or standing up to speak, the ability to communicate your ideas clearly is a superpower.Ask yourself: If you had a great idea today, would you know how to show it to the world?

The Bridges: Connecting with Humans

You can be the smartest person in the room, but if you cannot connect with others, it gets very lonely (and very difficult).I used to think Networking meant handing out business cards on LinkedIn. I was wrong. Real networking is actually about Active Listening. It is about cross-cultural communication—understanding that a friend from Turkey might see the world differently than a friend from Nigeria, and that is beautiful. The goal isn’t to be “popular.” The goal is Providing Value. When you stop asking “What can I get?” and start asking “How can I help?”, doors start to open in ways you never expected.

The Engine: Learning How to Learn

School gives us a syllabus, but life does not.The most liberating skills I ever picked up were Research and Self-Directed Learning. When you realize you can teach yourself Web Development or how to start a YouTube channel just by being curious and searching for answers, the fear of the unknown disappears. This also ties into Financial Control. You don’t need to be a millionaire to understand money. You just need the discipline to learn how it works so it doesn’t control you.

The Struggle: The Things I Am Still Bad At

Now, here is the honest part. Please do not think I have mastered all of this. In fact, there are three things I am currently fighting with every single day:

  1. Time Management: I still procrastinate.Decision Making: I still overthink simple choices.Goal Setting: Sometimes I aim too high, sometimes too low.

I am sharing this because I want you to know that it is okay to be a “work in progress.” We are all trying to figure it out.

The Real Battle

At the end of the day, improving these skills is not just about getting a better job or making money. It is deeper than that. There is a concept called Jihadun-nafs. It means the struggle against the self. It is the battle to overcome your laziness, your ego, and your fears to become the person you were meant to be.Every time you choose to learn instead of scroll, every time you listen instead of talk, and every time you manage your time better, you are winning a small victory in that battle.I am nowhere near perfect. I am just a student of life, trying a little harder today than I did yesterday. Will you join me on this climb?

What is one skill you are currently struggling to learn? Let me know—we can figure it out together.
